We need schools for the deaf – Abia JONAPWD.

The Abia State branch of the National Association for Persons with Disabilities appealed to the state government to establish a school for the deaf and construct student dormitories.

The Abia State branch of the National United Association of Persons with Disabilities has appealed to the state government to establish a school for the deaf in Afara Umuahia and build dormitories for the blind school.

The Chairmanofthechapter,Mr. Wisdom Okechukwu Kalu, stated this in aspeech during the state’s first dialoguesessionon Disability Day with the state governor in Umuahia over the weekend.

He calledon the government to provide chapters with subsidies,memberjobsandadministrativetools,to make the national secretariat humanrightsfriendly, and toestablishcommitteesinchapters.

While commending the appointment of Mr. David Anyaere as SpecialAssistant on Persons withDisabilities,theGovernorcalledon parents of young peoplewithdisabilities to stop hiding them from the public.

Governor Alex Otti declared the event open, saying his administration supports the inclusion and welfare of people with disabilities, adding that the government abhors any form of discrimination against people with disabilities.

Mr. Otti, who was represented by his representative, Mr. Ikechukwu Emetu, added that the administration had demonstrated its position through appointments, encouragement and support to members and chapters.

In his speech, the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Nwabilo Ananaba ,thanked the chapter for bringing gratonites the state, especially in the field of sports, by breaking world records.

According to the SpecialAssistant, the event,organized by theministry in collaboration with the ministry, was aimed at promoting the rights, dignity and well-being of personswithdisabilities in the state.
