The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, on Wednesday inaugurated a special team called the “Special Intervention Squad” to curb the spate of kidnappings in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the launch of the special unit in Abuja, the Police Commissioner said the team is made up of specially trained mobile police officers and is expected to quickly respond to security violations in the FCT. Stated.
Mr. Egbetokun assured Nigerians that the newly formed special forces would also be deployed to neighboring states to address the challenges of the security situation, noting that the troops would carry out extensive regional security.
Violence erupted on January 3, 2024, following the kidnapping of his six brothers and their father at Bwari Area Council, Abuja. The kidnappers reportedly killed one of the sisters, identified as Nabiha, after her parents failed to meet the deadline to pay the N60 million ransom.
On Monday, the IGP called for intensification of efforts to “annihilate kidnappers and other criminally minded persons” in the capital.
The IGP also met with the force management team and tactical forces in Abuja.
President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday condemned the recent spate of kidnappings and bandit attacks in the FCT and other parts of the country, describing the development as disturbing, ungodly and evil.
The President assured that all the necessary resources, policies and plans for the inclusive education of Nigeria’s youth would soon be made available while the security agencies acted decisively to immediately address the current challenges. He said he was deaf.
